"Holy Flash Animation!"

I usually detest websites relying too heavily on Flash animations - they can be a pain for dial-up users to load, and too often the animation seems to exist merely "because it's cool." One of the most important ideas that a designer - heck, anyone - needs to learn:

"Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should."
But today I learned about perhaps the finest use of Flash ever: The Bat Pages, devoted to the 1960s Batman TV show. Yes, the show was hokey (and Caesar Romero wouldn't even shave his moustache), but it was hokey-fun, from the cartoon titles to the whirling Bat-logo scene-changer to the catchy-yet-philosophical theme song.

The Bat Pages strive to recreate the entire Bat-Video Experience, and they do a mighty-fine job, with opening titles, sound effects, interactive bits, and more. So-- atomic engines to power, turbines to speed, speakers on, and go! (Note the special bonus included for those visitors lucky enough to find the Bat Shark Repellent.)

Thanks to my brother John Kannenberg (founder, designer, and all-around guru of the net.music label Stasisfield) for the tip!

Gene, Cool comics blog! I share your usual disdain toward Flash, but mine is based on usability reasons, like the ones found on Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox column. Please feel free to also read, post, and check back with my own comic and popular culture blog. Thanks!

Thanks for the comment, Bobby! I tried to reply earlier this week, but we lost power just as I was finishing up. Nice blog, and Alertbox looks interesting too, thoI don't see any Flash anywhere (anywhere obvious, at least).

Gene, Thank you for your comments about Discourse Chronicle, I appreciate the support that you and Kate provide. The absence of Flash, Java, and almost any images is part of the beauty that is Alertbox.

Gosh, Gene. The Batman stuff is really neat and fun. Thanks for the tip. I hope you and Kate are having great fun in DC. It's probably colder than Houston but I'll bet all your buddies are there so you'll be warm and well entertained. Probably won't have any trouble finding champagne tonight, either. Lucky you!

Happy New Year to you and Kate, and every best wish for the new year!

Happy New Year, Pat! As I write this, you've got less than 90 minutes to accomplish all of your goals for 2005 :-)

I only wish I were with Kate in DC - I've been keeping the home fires burning. But Kate comes back this evening, so at least we get to ring in the New Year together.

Best wishes to you and Peter on a funtacular 2006!
